Profile: Matrokk

Matrokk is a mixed media fine artist and illustrator from the Greater Manchester area. Social and creative, he enjoys the vibrancy of city life and finds it to be of constant inspiration. When it comes to art his work is surreal and imaginative and never follows one straight path or theme. A relative newcomer in the world of commercial art he feels privileged to be able to express emotion in a creative and visual form that people can relate to. Conveying deep, heartfelt emotions with atmosphere, his artistic style is often dark and poetic. His themes come from experience, love of fantasy visuals and a vivid imagination.

Surreal and dreamy, his work is composed of a blend of painting, digital illustration, photography and hand drawing. This style has gained his work something of an international profile, with art commissioned, sold and recognized in various countries. On the flip side, his illustrations are part of a top agency as well as used in promotional marketing campaigns. Regular imagery in his work has included theatre, his love for mask making and machinery. Inspirations are human psyche, music, duality of character and fairytales.

Machinery is of passionate interest due to the industrial beauty, strength, shape and vulnerability of cogs & working mechanical parts. He says,
"Somewhat like the human body, they are the heart of a machine, yet can be broken and eventually tarnish and wear. But they leave a silent legacy and have always been a part of something useful, astoundingly beautiful or momentous." Matrokk uses a combination of acrylics, gouache, watercolours seamlessly combined with photography and pencil drawing, as well as any other creative media he feels suitable.
